Clarification: Swing Rocker and Swing Counter Requirements – Junior Rhythm Dance

Skate Canada is providing the following clarification to ensure a consistent understanding and application of the Swing Rocker and Swing Counter requirements for Key Points 1 and 2 of Westminster 2 in the Junior Rhythm Dance.

Swing Requirement on the Exit of the Turn

For Key Points 1 and 2 of Westminster 2, the required free-leg swing must be demonstrated on the exit of the Swing Rocker/Counter. As outlined in ISU Rule 704, paragraph 11.a)(x) – Swing Rocker or Counter, a Swing Rocker or Counter is defined as:

“A type of Rocker or Counter in which the free leg swings smoothly past close to the skating leg before the turn and after the turn is either moved past the skating leg and held behind over the tracing or allowed to swing forward.”

In practical terms:

  • Before the turn: the free leg must swing smoothly past close to the skating leg.
  • After the turn/on the exit: the free leg must either move past the skating leg and be held behind over the tracing or be allowed to swing forward.

Therefore, for Key Points 1 and 2 of Westminster 2, completing the Rocker or Counter itself is not sufficient. The prescribed free-leg action must also be completed after the turn, on the exit, in accordance with the definition of a Swing Rocker or Swing Counter. Coaches are encouraged to review this requirement with their Junior Dance teams and ensure the required free-leg action is clearly demonstrated before and after the turn.
